Here we go! 10 hidden gems in Uganda’s untamed district!
1. Visit the village of a champion
In the heart of Kween, the village of Mosopisiek is home to some of the world’s most celebrated runners. This welcoming community offers visitors a chance to meet the families of Olympic and World champions. If you're lucky, you might be invited to try ‘power food’ harvested from the forest, served with the warmth and hospitality this area is known for. Want to dive deeper into their athletic roots? Check out our feature on Mosopisiek’s running champions in Adventure Tourism magazine.
2. learn to craft traditional bamboo baskets
Deep in the forests of Mount Elgon, a special type of bamboo, Aldoneria Alpina, thrives. For generations, the women of Mosopisiek have been crafting beautiful bamboo baskets, a practice intricately woven into their daily lives. These baskets are used for trading grains and fruits, but also a symbol of their heritage. On the Mosopisiek Trail, you’ll have the opportunity to learn this traditional craft firsthand from a passionate group of local women eager to share their skills.
3. Ride to prayer mountain
Perched high with panoramic views of the Karamoja plains, Prayer Mountain is a sacred spot for locals. Whether during Easter or Christmas when hundreds gather for mass, or throughout the year for moments of reflection, this tranquil place offers peace and breathtaking scenery. The journey there, via the rugged Atar-Ngenge road, is a thrilling adventure, taking you through one of Uganda’s most scenic shortcuts, en route to the Pian Upe Game Reserve.
4. Take the Piswa trail to the peaks
Looking for a gentle but rewarding climb? The Piswa Trail is your best bet. Known for being the easiest ascent to the peaks of Mount Elgon, this trail offers spectacular views without a grueling effort. Starting just two kilometers from David’s Homestay, where visitors on the Mosopisiek Trail stay, this hike is a must for adventurers seeking to experience Elgon’s peaks.]

With just a touch of rain, the marram roads can turn slick and challenging. But don’t let that stop you! The lush beauty of the Benet highlands more than makes up for the difficulty. At Home of Friends two Giant bikes are ready to take you on an adrenaline-filled ride through the stunning red dirt trails of Mount Elgon.
6. Listen to the stories of Mosopisiek elders
How was life in the forest back in the days? What cultural cave events would take place? What can the youth of today learn from the Mosopisiek lifestyle? Due to the abundance of knowledge, storytelling with Mosopisiek elders is an enriching experience. Doing this activity around the campfire, under a sky full of stars, makes it even more unique.
7. Do the Mengia village tour
Its waterfall is almost as stunning and tall as the largest Sipi treasure. A bigger difference is that the villages surrounding Mengia are more unspoiled and pure than the Sipi villages. Also, the people are more friendly and relaxed. On your Mengia tour you can learn how to play an indigenous game, listen to the stories of elders, enjoy the magnificent views on a lush hilltop or climb a little higher to the largest cave of Mount Elgon: Mukuuso.
8. Try the secret to a long life
What’s the secret to a long life in the Mosopisiek highlands? According to locals, it’s sseewyondet, a stinging nettle with mystical properties. Elders in the area credit their longevity to this plant, which is traditionally mashed into an edible form using a unique crusher with four hooks. While preparing sseewyondet takes skill and patience, the reward is an incredibly nutritious dish, especially when mixed with fresh milk.
9. DIscover hidden waterfalls
Mount Elgon’s heavy rainfall ensures that hidden waterfalls spring to life in every rainy season.
