More about Mount Elgon
Mount Elgon is a solitary volcanic mountain on the border of Uganda and Kenya. The peak of the mountain ‘Wagagai’ lies at an altitude of 4,321 meters above sea level. The Ugandan side of Mount Elgon is famous for its Arabica coffee and for being a hotbed of long-distance running talent.
Mount Elgon is inhabited by various tribes, the ‘Sabiny’ being the largest with a population of 330,000. Other tribes are the ‘Bagisu’ on the Western side, Mosopisiek in the highlands of Kween District and the Sabaot on the Kenyan side. The region’s central and administrative headquarters is Kapchorwa which means ‘Home of Friends’ in the local Kupsapiiny language.
Mount Elgon is blessed with fertile soils, green rolling hills and, as the touristic map on this page points out, an abundance of waterfalls, caves and amazing viewpoints. The commonly known tourist spot in the area is Sipi Falls, but in recent years more tourists are discovering the equally / more beautiful areas around Kapchorwa Town and in Kween District. These areas are certainly more off-the-beaten track and less tourstic, with plenty of attractive trails and a healthier and more indigenous lifestyle.
Our favorite area is Benet subcounty, in the higher belts of Kween District. This is where the Mosopisiek live, a tribe of former hunter-gatherers. The Mosopisiek, a sub-tribe of only 15,000 people, happen to be the (grand)mothers and (grand)fathers of Kapchorwa’s Olympic and World running champions: Joshua Cheptegei, Victor Kiplangat, Peruth Chemutai and Jacob Kiplimo all share the same genes. Up to today, foods from the forest form the diet of the people here: various types of greens, mushrooms, bamboo and wild berries are the secret behind the strength and resistance of these humble and interesting mountain people.
On our Mosopisiek trail, developed in conjunction with our native guides and the Mosopisiek Community, you will experience a traditional African lifestyle: crafting bamboo baskets, elder storytelling and the name giving ceremony are the favorite activities of the handful of visitors that have gone before you.
Other hikes in this 8-day package, such as the Kapchorwa Wilderness trail, Kapchorwa Nature Walk and the Sipi Falls hike, take you to other beautiful parts of this green and fertile mountain. Yes, extremely fertile: Mount Elgon is also known as the food basket of Uganda:)
