Step into the heart of Ugandan culinary traditions with the Kapchorwa Mamas, who will guide you through the preparation of a nutritious warrior meal. For generations, the women of Kapchorwa have been cooking energy-boosting meals to support the warriors and hunters who covered long distances. In this interactive cooking experience, you’ll learn to prepare karo, local greens, and the unique kweryonik (sour milk).

Now hosted at a traditional Kapchorwa home, this activity offers an intimate and authentic cooking experience, making it perfect for anyone curious about local food and culture.

  • Duration: 2 hours (4 pm - 6 pm).

  • Location: A traditional Kapchorwa home, offering an immersive and authentic environment.

  • Booking: Book at least three days in advance. A minimum of two participants is required.

Cultural storyteller Shadrack, who is your guide for this activity, will take you to the garden to collect the food for today’s meal. In a practical and fun way, he will teach you how to cut and carry the most nutritious ingredients. Along the way you will pick some insights about Kapchorwa’s rich farm life.

2. Prepare traditional Ugandan dishes

Under the guidance of the Kapchorwa Mamas and Shadrack, you’ll prepare a classic Ugandan meal including ‘matoke’ (steamed plantains), pumpkin leaves and a ‘karo’ (millet paste). These dishes are rich in nutrients and were traditionally made to replenish the energy of warriors and hunters after long journeys.

3. A cooking experience at a traditional Kapchorwa home

Now held at a traditional home instead of an ancient cave, this cooking class allows for an even more personal experience. You'll gain insights into daily farm life in Kapchorwa while enjoying the warm hospitality of your local hosts.
