The quality of the road network in Eastern Uganda has improved dramatically over the past few years, including the highway from Jinja. This is making the journey much faster and smoother than before.

Here is an overview of how to get to Kapchorwa from different directions and with different means of transport:

By car / motor bike (self-drive)

From Kampala (Jinja / Mbale):

Take the Jinja highway in the direction of Lugazi (Jinja). Leave Kampala at 5am if you want to completely dodge the jams of Seeta and Mukono! In Jinja, keep straight, in the direction of Iganga. Three kilometers after Iganga Town, take a sharp left onto the Tirinyi - Mbale highway. After reaching Mbale Town, at the central clock tower, follow the Kumi / Soroti highway. Three kilometers outside Mbale Town, take a sharp right to Sironko and Kapchorwa. In Muyembe, at a junction with fresh fruits & vegetables, turn right and climb to Sipi Falls (Kapchorwa Town). When reaching Sipi, keep following the highway higher up the mountain. After 25 minutes you reach Kapchorwa Town.

NB: In Kapchorwa Town, our first signpost is standing 50 meters after Centenary Bank at your right hand. Turn right, and keep following the signposts from here.

From Malaba:

Take the highway to Mbale. At the clock tower in Mbale Town, follow Kumi / Soroti highway. Three kilometers outside Mbale Town, take a sharp right to Sironko and Kapchorwa (Moroto highway). In Muyembe, at the fresh fruits & vegetables junction (tip!), turn right and climb to Sipi Falls and Kapchorwa Town.

From Kitale / Suam:

After entering Uganda at the Suam border crossing, follow the new highway all the way to Kapchorwa Town. In Kapchorwa Town, take left at the ‘Postbank’ junction. Follow the road for roughly one kilometer until you see our signpost on your right hand side. Take a sharp right. Our Guesthouse is located after 300 meters on your left hand side.

From Moroto:

During the rainy season and without a strong 4-wheel drive: Take the tarmacked highway from Moroto - via Napak - to Soroti. In Soroti Town, keep left and take the highway to Mbale. Three kilometers before Mbale Town, turn left to Sironko and Kapchorwa. In Muyembe, turn right and climb to Sipi Falls and Kapchorwa Town.

During the dry season & with a strong 4-wheel drive: Take the tarmacked highway to Nakapiripirit. Nakapiripirit, keep right in the direction of Namalu (Moroto - Mbale highway). Follow this road all the way and through Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve.

Option 1 (adventurous shortcut): To reach Kapchorwa Town and our Guesthouse via a scenic but adventurous shortcut, take the Ngenge - Atar road (the fastest route on Google Maps). When reaching the top of the escarpment, you will hit the new Suam - Kapchorwa Highway. Take right until you reach Kapchorwa Town. In Kapchorwa Town, take left at the ‘Postbank’ junction. Follow the road for roughly one kilometer until you see our signpost on your right hand side. Take a sharp right and reach our Guesthouse after 300 meters on the left.

Option 2 (tarmacked longcut): Follow the Moroto - Mbale highway all the way until Muyembe. In Muyembe, take a sharp left in the direction of Sipi Falls and Kapchorwa Town. From here you can use the above map again.

By mini-bus

From Shell petrol station in Nakawa (Kampala), Time Keeper mini-buses (matatus) move daily to Kapchorwa (and vice versa). Price is approximately 11USD (40,000UGX) per person, with a slight increase during the Christmas season and if fuel prices suddenly rise. Unlike other mini-buses, Time Keeper goes straight to its destination and allows a maximum of three people to sit next to each other on the behind rows. Though a seat in front has the most leg space. For bookings on the evening before*, call Time Keeper on number: +256(0)772628119.

* Don’t book earlier given the specific planning horizon:) Always make sure you get the number of the driver for direct communication on the day of traveling.

NB: It is also possible for the Time Keeper to pick and drop you along the highway in Jinja, for a slightly lower price.
