“I had an amazing stay at Home of Friends! It was the perfect place to combine activities together with quiet moments. I did a lot of great activities, for example an interesting walk trough Kween District and exploring a beautiful cave. After the activities Home of Friends was the perfect place to relax in the garden as they have some amazingly tasty food! ”

About the Sabiny People
The Sabiny are some of the warmest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet. I remember my very first day in the region, back in August 2014. It was pouring rain, and we were hiking to Teryet—where the High Altitude Training Center now stands—led by Fred* and some friends. Along the way, complete strangers invited us in from the rain, offering us hot cups of African tea and fresh chapati. Their kindness left a mark on me that I'll never forget.
*Fred Cherich, a sports science student at the time, was the one who first introduced me to Kapchorwa and Sipi.
Since that first wonderful experience, we've built our cultural and Community experiences around the values of hospitality, friendship, and learning from one another. A big part of this journey has been working with the Sebei Cultural Storytellers, formerly known as the St. Peters Group. These passionate young people from Kapchorwa are committed to preserving and reviving the ancient cultural traditions of the Sabiny.
In 2018, we partnered with the Sebei Cultural Storytellers to create the Cave Experience, with guidance from Theo Vos, the founder of a Community tourism and impact organisation in nearby Moroto. We’ve since added other experiences like campfire storytelling and Cooking with the Kapchorwa Mamas.
One of the latest developments in our cultural tourism efforts is the Cave Museum, a fascinating collection of cultural artifacts set in a cave not far from Home of Friends. The project is run by an aspiring tour guide named Poul and his father, Semu, who vividly remembers when his clan used the cave to hide from cattle raiders in his youth.
Another exciting addition is the Mosopisiek Trail, a 2- or 3-day trek through the highlands of Kween District. Visitors on this trail get the chance to meet and engage with the Mosopisiek people, a sub-tribe of the Sabiny. The Mosopisiek used to live in the forest that is now Mount Elgon National Park, and their traditional way of life includes twin and cave ceremonies, African-style huts, and a diet rich in honey, wild greens, and bushmeat. It’s a world away from modern supermarkets and city life.
This land also happens to be the ancestral home of some of Uganda’s—and Kapchorwa’s—greatest long-distance running champions. You can read more about this in a recent article by New Vision and in Adventure Tourism magazine (page 14).
We, along with the community, are excited to welcome more visitors to share and learn from the rich culture of the Sabiny and Mosopisiek people!
