Conquering Mount Elgon: A 5-Day Adventure to the Peaks

Once the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Elgon’s grandeur has been shaped by erosion, now ranking as the 22nd highest peak on the continent. Despite this, it remains one of Uganda's most exhilarating adventure destinations. Join me, Daan from Home of Friends, and Juma from Massif Montane Expedition as we recount our unforgettable 5-day ascent to the majestic peaks of Mount Elgon.

Day 1: Piswa Camp TO New Hunters Cave (16km)

Our journey begins with an adventurous ride to the starting point in Kapkwata. The rainy season has made the roads nearly impassable, and after bouncing through muddy paths, we are dropped near the river of Kwosir at 2700 meters. With the bridge out, we walk through peaceful villages before reaching the boundary of Mount Elgon National Park. Local children join us as we enter the thick montane rainforest.

After an hour, we reach Piswa Camp, where soldiers are stationed to protect the forest. From here, the landscape transforms dramatically. Moorlands open up before us, dotted with streams that cascade into waterfalls further down the mountain. As we take a break by one of these streams, surrounded by the endemic Senecio Elgonessis trees, we marvel at the natural beauty of the place. The air is fresh, the skies clear—an ideal first day for our ascent!

By 5 pm, we arrive at New Hunters Cave at 3,350 meters. Though the cave offers only limited shelter, we pitch our tents outside after the drizzle stops. As night falls, we gather around a campfire, grateful for the warmth and the simple but satisfying meal of rice with tomato and aubergine sauce after the 16 km trek.

Day 2: New Hunters Cave to Mude Basecamp (11km)

Waking up to the chilly mountain air, we warm our hands over the fire before starting our ascent to the caldera ridge at 4,000 meters. The landscape continues to impress. Moorlands, rocky outcrops, and towering Senecio trees surround us, creating a surreal backdrop.

As we climb, mist envelops the ridge, but soon clears, revealing breathtaking views of the border peaks between Uganda and Kenya. The caldera of Mount Elgon, the largest in the world, opens up before us, offering a magical sight. The ever-changing weather is a constant companion. One moment I’m bundled up in two rain jackets, and the next, the sun is out, and I’m down to a T-shirt.

We descend gradually through swamps and rocky terrain, arriving at Mude Basecamp at 3,500 meters around 4 pm. Unlike the previous night, this campsite offers the luxury of pitching our tents inside a hut.

Day 3: Mude Basecamp To Wagagai Peak and back (18km)

Today is the highlight of our adventure: summiting Wagagai, Mount Elgon’s highest peak at 4,321 meters. We set off early, passing Jackson’s Summit and Mubiyi Peak along the way. The scenery is astounding. Below us, the plains of Mbale stretch out with Wanale Hill in the distance. Midway through, we pause at Jackson’s Pool, a refreshing spot popular with hikers in the dry season.

As we approach Wagagai, the peak remains hidden until the final kilometer. A plateau near the summit offers stunning views of the crater lakes nestled in the vast caldera. Then the weather shifts, and hailstones accompany us during the final ascent. Despite the cold and mist obscuring the views, reaching Wagagai is a triumphant and emotional moment.

We take quick photos before heading back to Mude Basecamp, where a warm fire and hot meal await.

Day 4 Mude Basecamp - Tutum Cave (37km)

Today is the longest day of our hike, covering 37 km. Thankfully, most of it is a descent, though the trail does involve some steep climbs across valleys. Our path first takes us up to 3,950 meters, where the skies clear, granting us expansive views of the Simu Gorge. We stop for lunch at Kajeri Camp before continuing through moorlands and rain-soaked trails.

By late afternoon, we arrive at Tutum Cave, the largest on Mount Elgon. This massive cave is a striking finale to a challenging day of hiking.

Day 5: Tutum Cave TO Kapkwai Exploration Center (11km)

The final stretch of our trek is a gentle 11 km descent through dense rainforest. Along the way, we spot blue and Black-and-White Colobus monkeys, adding a final touch of wilderness to our journey. After passing through bamboo groves, we reach Kapkwai Exploration Center, marking the end of our unforgettable adventure.
