Kapchorwa, known both as a district and its central town, is a treasure trove of culture, nature, and adventure. In the local Kupsapiiny language, Kapchorwa literally means “Home of Friends,” and it’s easy to see why. It’s not just the stunning landscapes that captivate visitors. Kapchorwa is also the home and training ground of world-renowned running champions like Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo. But there’s so much more to discover in this remarkable region!

1. Where is Kapchorwa located?

Kapchorwa Town is nestled on the northern slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda, sitting at a lofty altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level. The town boasts breathtaking views of the Karamoja plains and the distant lakes Bisina and Kyoga, making it a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

2. How far is Kapchorwa from Kampala?

If you’re coming from Kampala, the drive to Kapchorwa typically takes between 6.5 to 7.5 hours, depending on traffic around Seeta and Mukono. Thanks to recent upgrades, all roads leading to Kapchorwa District are now tarmacked, ensuring a smoother ride. Just be prepared for some steep ascents around Sipi Falls and Kapchorwa Town as you approach the higher altitudes.



3. Who are the people living in Kapchorwa?

Kapchorwa is home to the Sabiny, a Southern Nilotic ethnic group that primarily occupies the districts of Kapchorwa, Kween, and Bukwo. The Sabiny make up around 90% of the population on Mount Elgon, while the Gisu (a Bantu tribe) form the remaining 10%. The Sabiny have an estimated population of 300,000.

Among the Sabiny is the Mosopisiek, a subtribe numbering about 15,000, who were the original inhabitants of what is now Mount Elgon National Park. The Mosopisiek are known for their rich cultural heritage and carry the genes of some of the greatest running champions around!

4. How can I reach Kapchorwa from the Kenyan side?

The Kitale – Suam – Kapchorwa highway has recently been completed, offering a wide, scenic drive through the lush green slopes of Mount Elgon. From the border at Suam, it’s just 77 kilometers to Kapchorwa Town, making it an easy journey from Kenya.

5. Which running champions hail from Kapchorwa?

Kapchorwa is known as the Land of Champions for a reason. This town has produced some of the world’s top athletes, including Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, Jacob Kiplimo, Stella Chesang, Victor Kiplangat, Moses Kipsiro, and Stephen Kiprotich. These athletes train in the high-altitude landscapes surrounding Kapchorwa, where the terrain helps them build endurance and strength.

7. Does Kapchorwa have a hospital?

Yes, Kapchorwa has a hospital, but the quality of care is lower than international standards. If you’re in need of more specialised care, the C-Care clinic of IMC Hospital in Mbale (a 1.5-hour drive away) is a reputable option. For bone fractures and orthopedic care, Kumi Orthopaedic Center is the best choice and is about a 2.5-hour drive from Kapchorwa Town.

8. How is the security in Kapchorwa?

The days of cattle raiding are behind us, and today, Kapchorwa is considered a safe region for tourists. 9. Does Kapchorwa have a university?

Kapchorwa is on the educational map too! A branch of Uganda Christian University (UCU) is set to open soon, and the district already hosts a branch of Makerere University Business School (MUBS). This makes Kapchorwa a growing hub for higher education in Eastern Uganda.

10. Does Kapchorwa have a good supermarket?

While you’ll find several Indian-owned supermarkets in town, the locally owned Super Stores stands out for its variety and quality. It’s a great place to stock up on essentials for your stay in Kapchorwa.
