How to Make the Most of Your Elgon Trip

With newly built roads, world-renowned running champions, and the stunning Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon is quickly gaining recognition on the international tourism scene. To help you make the most of your adventure, here are seven essential tips for an unforgettable trip to this magnificent region.

1.Move beyond Sipi

There’s no denying the beauty of the Sipi Falls, but it can sometimes feel a bit touristy. You may find yourself dodging the occasional hustle from youth asking for money. So, what’s the solution? Head higher up the mountain, to the serene villages of Kapchorwa and Kween. Here, you’ll find equally stunning landscapes without the crowds, as well as a rich, authentic culture that’s just waiting to be explored.

These villages are also home to Uganda’s "Land of Running Champions," offering plenty of trails for hikers, bikers, and runners. Whether you're a slow traveler looking to soak up the tranquility or an outdoor enthusiast seeking adventure, this side of Mount Elgon has something for everyone.

2. Be moderately fit

While Mount Elgon isn’t the steepest mountain around, you’ll encounter the occasional challenging climb. Being moderately fit will help you venture further off the beaten path, where you’ll find the most exciting natural wonders and cultural experiences. Trust us, the effort is well worth it when you uncover hidden waterfalls and remote villages.

3. Bring warm clothes

Kapchorwa’s evenings can get pretty chilly, so make sure to pack some warm clothing. Although the sun shines often, especially in the mornings, rain is not uncommon—so don’t forget your rain gear either.

At Home of Friends, we keep you cosy with extra blankets and a campfire to fight off the mountain chill. Nothing beats warming up by the fire, sharing stories under the stars!

4. Take enough time to explore

If you’re cramming Mount Elgon into a tight schedule, you’re missing out. Spending just one or two nights here doesn’t do justice to all the highlights this region has to offer. With its vast landscapes, fascinating cultures, and slower pace of life, Mount Elgon is the perfect destination for slow travel. Make sure to give yourself enough time to fully immerse in the area’s beauty.

5. Be inspired by the running champions

Jacob Kiplimo, Peruth Chemutai, Joshua Cheptegei, Victor Kiplangat, Stella Chesang, and Stephen Kiprotich—this small region has produced some of the world’s top athletes. Is there anywhere else on earth with such a high concentration of champions? We doubt it!

While you’re here, soak up some of that inspiration. Visit the villages where these champions grew up, learn to cook the local dishes that fuel their success, or run or hike the same trails they use for training. You might just catch a glimpse of greatness!

6. Learn a few words in the local language

Kupsapiiny, the local language of Kapchorwa, is quite different from other languages spoken in Uganda, especially the Bantu dialects. The locals appreciate it when you make an effort to speak a few words in their language—especially greetings. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

General greeting: Mwénéé (hello, how are you?) Response: Amitéé (I am fine)

Greeting for women: Takwenjo (hello, how are you?) Response: Yeko (I am fine)

Greeting only for elder men: Subai? (hello, how are you sir?) Response: Abo (I am fine)

7. Explore Kween District to the fullest

Kween District is an often-overlooked gem, especially the higher reaches of the region, which are nothing short of breathtaking. In a recent blog, we listed the top 10 hidden gems in Kween, but the truth is, words can hardly capture the beauty of this place. You need to see it for yourself—and make sure to allow plenty of time to fully absorb the natural and cultural wonders that await you.
